November 2009
In a year when England Cricket is celebrating an Ashes victory and South Africa is gearing up for the football world cup Cadweb was able to get in on the act in a small way by sponsoring the Cambridge Youth Cricket’s under 13s tour of South Africa http://cambridgecb.play-cricket.com. The junior county team spent the 10 day October half term break touring the Cape Province playing 6 matches against various schools and clubs. Cadweb had one parent following in the entourage supporting the team.
The team played a series of 6 matches, winning 4 and losing 2. One match went to the last ball before a 4 dispatched to the boundary won the day for Cambridge! At every venue the team and their followers were given the warmest welcome from the opposition and lavish Braais (barbeques) were provided by the hosts.
Cambridge managed to defeat two of the top teams in the Western Cape Province which shows the players are competitive at this age with their overseas contemporaries. Maybe the next trip will be to Australia to see how they fair ‘down under’!?
The boys took advantage of their time in South Africa to visit the most remarkable sites (Table Mountain, Robben Island) The Cape Town Waterfront etc. They were also able to go on a short safari and go whale watching at the famous Hermanus resort. They even managed to visit a Penguin colony! You would be hard pressed to surpass the variety of wildlife they were able to see is such a short time anywhere in the world.
The team started their tour with a defeat which was disappointing. However they bounced back with two victories on the trot including one against Bishop’s school in Cape Town which was played under flood lights. (See picture above and below).
The tour was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. For the followers it was a last chance to get some warm sunshine before returning to the long dark winter days in the UK. Congratulations to all the boys and good luck next season!
